Our good friends over at www.IAmJasonLee.com caught up with R&B star, Dawn Richard on the set of her “Automatic” video shoot. She opens up about her latest EP ‘Armor On’ and taking the risk of becoming a solo artist. Check out the full interview and pictures below:

Jason Lee: Dawn, the album is AMAZING! As you know I chose to do the Kelly Price event because I felt that something was missing in R&B. Automatic gives me EVERYTHING music should. What was the inspiration?

Dawn Richard: Druski, Carla Carter, and I needed an aggressive start for the Hearts…this was the anthem for all hearts who felt like the world wanted them to conform , and they didn’t want to.. This was the middle finger to the haters record.

JL: Some artists have a hard time moving from a successful group let alone two to a garnering respect as a solo artist – clearly you’ve done that with this EP. Were you nervous or did you know your fans would be there waiting for you?

DR: I’m Always nervous when I’m taking a risk. But then I swallow it and dive head first. Lol

JL:  The vocals in Automatic are dope. I know you’ve heard this a few times but I haven’t heard you respond to it. There can be a clear comparison to Brandy. What say you?

DR: I’m honored. She is the best honestly… But I feel there are differences in our sounds. Two totally different approaches..

JL: Having seen the behind the scenes of this upcoming video and the FLY photos of you, the dancers, and the landscape, how involved were you in creating the visual to this track?

DR: Completely inlvolved. I picked this idea a while back, around Bombs video, with my best friend and Drew in the room. I said guys this Is what I’m thinking for automatic and they were like this is dope. I’m always in my head preparing the next visual. I already know why I’m doing for the next 3 videos

JL:  What do you want this song and this video to translate to everyone?

DR: Never be the world’s idea of you… Be God’s idea of you.
